Fire Performance of Phenolic Foam Boards in High-Temperature Environments

1. Inherent Fire-Resistant Properties

Phenolic foam is one of the most fire-resistant insulation materials due to its:

Low Flammability:

Class A Fire Rating (ASTM E84): Flame spread index ≤25, smoke density ≤50.

Euroclass B-s1,d0 (EN 13501-1): Limited contribution to fire.

Self-Extinguishing: Halts burning once the flame source is removed.

Char Formation: At ~300–400°C, it carbonizes into a protective char layer, slowing heat transfer.

2. Performance Under High-Temperature Exposure

Short-Term Exposure (≤250°C):

Maintains structural integrity; minimal smoke/toxic gas emission (CO/CO₂ only).

Prolonged High Heat (>250°C):

Gradual charring reduces thickness but retains insulation function.

Critical Threshold: At ~400°C, resin decomposition accelerates (avoid continuous exposure).

3. Limitations & Mitigation

Spalling Risk: In extreme fires (>600°C), the char layer may detach.

Solution: Pair with fireproof barriers (e.g., gypsum board).

Thermal Degradation: Long-term >120°C use requires high-temperature-grade formulations.

4. Applications in High-Temp Zones

HVAC & Ducts: Withstands intermittent heat from exhaust systems.

Industrial Insulation: Used in refineries (up to 150°C continuous).

Fireproof Doors/Ceilings: As core material in passive fire protection systems.

Testing Standards:

ASTM E119: Fire endurance (e.g., 1–2 hours for walls).

UL 94 V-0: Vertical burn resistance.

Note: For critical infrastructure (e.g., tunnels), combine with intumescent coatings for enhanced protection.
